In previous years, student test results were separated into four levels of proficiency, with Level 4 showing the highest degree of understanding. Beginning in 2014, EOG and EOC test scores will be measured on five levels.
The new achievement levels are similar to the old ones, with the addition of a middle category that didn’t exist before. Students scoring at Levels 1 and 2 will likely need additional help next year to succeed in that subject area. Students scoring at Level 3 are considered proficient for that grade level or course, but may still need some targeted help in the next grade or course. Students scoring at Levels 4 or 5 are ready for the next grade or course, and are also on a path to be prepared for college or a career by the time they graduate. More information on achievement levels is located on the N.C. Department of Public Instruction website. >>
The State Board of Education created the new achievement levels to more accurately communicate both how well students have mastered the standards in their current grade or course, as well as how ready they are to move forward to college and a career.
