Enloe Magnet High Students Study Language Abroad

Enloe Magnet High School students have put their studies of Russian to use by taking part in US Department of State-sponsored visits to Russia for language study.

Student Sean Norton is currently studying for the full academic year in Russia under scholarships from the US Department of State and American Council of Teachers of Russian. Norton completed Russian 2 at Enloe.

Lily Herbert, currently a senior, just returned from Kirov, Russia, after having received scholarships from the same organizations. Herbert is currently in Russian 3 after her study aboard helped her to bypass Russian 2.

Enloe graduate Logan Mintz also spent the summer studying Russian in Moscow on scholarship, and she will present information on her trip which included Moscow’s hottest summer in a thousand years. Mintz was named Enloe’s Russian Scholar Laureate by the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR) after completing Russian 5 at Enloe in 2007.

Herbert and Mintz have taken other upper-level language courses at Enloe. Herbert is currenly taking AP German. Mintz took AP Spanish Language.

Enloe’s Department of World Languages offers 8 languages: French, Italian, Latin, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, German, and Russian. The department chair is German teacher Nabeel Kandah.

Enloe teacher Richard Uzzle shares that students countywide may benefit from the money being put into scholarships through http://www.nsliforyouth.org/ Languages labeled as “security languages” have recently been given markedly higher funding by the federal government.

The US Department of State through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth provides full scholarships for eligible high school students to learn a new language, attend a new school and understand a new culture for a summer, semester or school year.

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth offer:

  • Scholarships to learn Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Russian, and Turkish
  • Unique language immersion programs in China, Egypt, India, Korea, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkey, and other countries around the world
  • Alumni networks to continue language and cultural learning
  • Springboards to other government sponsored programs to achieve language fluency

Music Students Prepare for Concerts

Our students are busy preparing for several upcoming concerts.
