Mills Park students meet Abram Piasek

Seventh graders at Mills Park Middle School met Holocaust survivor Abram Piasek. Students learned of his liberation from Auschwitz and his life in the U.S. eventually settling in North Carolina. Teacher Jen Cline arranged for Piasek to visit the school as students studied WW II in social studies.

Battle of the Books competition postponed due to inclement weather

The WCPSS Battle of the Books competition scheduled for Saturday, February 1st has been postponed. A rescheduled date will be announced soon.

Schools to be closed on Friday, Jan. 31

Because of continued hazardous driving conditions, Wake County schools will be closed on Friday, January 31st.  This decision comes after extensive staff evaluation of secondary and neighborhood road conditions, especially in outlying areas; school parking lots; school access roads; and carpool lanes.

Kenan Fellows application deadline is Feb. 9

The deadline for teachers to apply for the Kenan Fellows Program is Sunday, Feb. 9.

Interested teachers may complete online applications for 2014-15 Fellowships.

Teachers selected as Kenan Fellows gain research experience outside of the classroom to bring innovative lessons back to students. They receive two weeks of professional development and a stipend.

The fellowship program positions teachers to serve as ambassadors and leaders in their schools and communities. Visit kenanfellows.org to learn more.

Millbrook students discuss IB Extended Essay

Millbrook Magnet High students presented their extended essays, a major component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Students spend more than a year in research and writing the 4,000 word essay.
