Wakefield High athletic director named NC High School Athletic Director of the Year

The NC Athletic Education Association named Wakefield High athletic director Dexter Cooley the NC High School Athletic Director of the Year at its convention in Raleigh. Cooley is a teacher, coach and athletic director at Wakefield High.

While a head coach at Bunn High, Cooley was Coach of the Year three times. He accepted the assistant athletic director position at Millbrook High in 1991. He served as the assistant athletic director there for nine years, before accepting the athletic director position at Wakefield High in 2000.

Under Cooley’s direction, Wakefield High has won two men’s basketball state championships, volleyball state championship and six indoor/outdoor track and field state championships. In conference play, his coaches have won 35 conference titles in all sports.

Cooley has earned the NCHSAA Exemplary Sports Award and 2010 Wachovia Cup.
